RESEARCH

Quantitative VS. Qualitative Research

Mixed-method

Action Research:

It focuses on a specific problem that someone faced and how to solve this problem. The cyclical and iterative action research process comprises four stages: Planning stage, Acting stage, Developing stage, and Reflecting stage (Mertler, 2011).

1. Planning:

  • Identifying and limiting the Topic

  • Gathering Information

  • Reviewing the Related literature

  • Developing a Research Plan

2. Acting:

  • Implementing the Plan and Collecting Data

  • Analyzing the Data

3. Developing:

  • Developing an Action Plan

4. Reflecting:

  • Sharing and Communicating the Results

  • Reflecting on the Process

Traditional Research:

Traditional research is an independent experimental research study. In traditional research theory plays a primary role. The main purpose of traditional research is to draw conclusions and more focused on advancing knowledge which can be added to the knowledge base in the field of education. Traditional research was focused and relied on rigorous statistical analysis not practical, so it does not necessarily have any immediate practical values to academic researchers.

1. Developing a research question

2. Selecting a method or research design
3. Conducting data analysis
4. Reporting findings, interpretations, and making conclusions

Action VS. Traditional Research

Work Sample

ETEC543:

Three classmates and I conducted a research project to determine the fitness habits of college students and their perception of workout apps. We created a survey with questions used to collect data, and we interviewed 4 students, using codes markers, to improve the analysis. We found most students want to use workout app for losing weight and building muscle, and the workout app helps them to save money.

ETEC643:

I conducted a research project to understand the perception about college students use adventure video games to developing a vocabulary of your second language. I use a mixed method in my research. I use descriptive in Quantitative, I use to mean, median, mode, standard deviation, etc. I use the coding skill in Qualitative; I created my code in this research. I found college students prefer to using an adventure video game to developing their vocabulary, and females are more inclined toward video-game learning than males.

Reflection

ETEC543:

In the ETEC 543, I have learned to conduct action research. I know how to develop a good research topic; for example, if the topic is too broad I need to narrow it down and choose an interesting topic, and it needs to be creative. The research questions should connect to your topic. Also, I learned what is different from quantitative and qualitative. Those things are very useful when I want to do a new research project.

ETEC643:

In the ETEC 643, I learned many things. First, I conducted a research project to understand the perception about college students use adventure video games to developing a vocabulary of your second language. At the beginning my research topic is not this one; I narrow down it; the research topic is very important when we are doing the research. Second, I learned more about the quantitative method, in ETEC 543, I download pie chart from Google Form. I use it to analyze my data. In this time, I use descriptive in Quantitative method, in my paper, I use to mean, median, mode, standard deviation, frequency, and t-test. Last, I know when we write a research paper, it should have an introduction, literature review, methodology (participants, data collection, data analysis), finding/results, discussion, conclusion.
